Labeling: What it is, and why it is important

What is labeling? The term "labeling" refers to the act of making and applying labels that will be used to visually identify things of importance. When you want something to be noticed instead of ignored, you use labels. Think about the last time you looked for a bathroom- no matter where you were in the world, no matter what type of commercial building, the bathroom was clearly marked with a sign, or a "label". The "Men's Room" or "Women's Room" was "labeled" for easy identification. Just think how much harder and more confusing life would be without labels!

Why is labeling important? Because without labels, we are left to figure things out for ourselves. While this is sometimes possible, it is almost NEVER the best and most efficient way. Sometimes we feel like the environment in our work-place is self explanatory. But think back to your first day on the job, when you had to be led around and shown every detail and direction. Now, instead of all that hand-holding, imagine if everything were clearly and effectively labeled! Instead of needing care and direction for the first week, you may have been able to work efficiently with only one quick tour of the facility! Labels create a consistent, ever-present guide for all to use.

"Labeling is the common business task of visual identification."
